A graduate of the Mannes College of Music (NYC), Allen trained under saxophonist Harvey Pittel and the legendary Joe Allard. Allen's itinerary has encompassed performances with numerous groups including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Philharmonic, the New York City Ballet, the City Opera, The New Jersey Philharmonic, and various Jazz and experimental groups. Among the many venues he has performed in are CBGB's the Blue Note NYC, the Blue Note Japan, the Knitting Factory in NYC, the Caramoor Festival in Katonah, NY, Carnegie Hall, NYC, the 92nd Street Y, NYC, Jacob's Pillow in Massachusetts, Stamford College Palo Alto, CA, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and also several Broadway shows. Allen Won's masterclass was held on March 20, 2018 at the Kalani Bandroom at 7pm. The University of Hawai‘i Saxophone Choir presents an exciting program with several new premiers for this ensemble including: Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral (arr. Kaneshiro), Allegro from Beethoven’s Wind Octet (arr. El-Farrah), and Va! Laisse Couler me Larmes (arr. Yukumoto). Joining our concert is special guest, mezzo-soprano Maya Hoover. Praised for her vocal beauty, Ms. Hoover has been featured in performances locally and internationally. She has been a distinguished faculty member of the music department of the University of Hawai‘i since 2007. This year’s concert will also feature the debut of the Hawai‘i High School Saxophone Ensemble directed by David Hirano. This group features Oahu’s top high school saxophonists from six Oahu schools and is under the auspices of the Hawai‘i Saxophone Foundation. Students from six high schools on Oahu committed to rehearsals on Sunday mornings with Director David Hirano. Mr. Hirano also taught numerous masterclasses covering reeds, embouchure, tongue position, air support, posture, and instrument carriage. They performed two pieces at the UH Saxophone Choir Concert on March 18, 2018 and performed the last piece together with the college and community members. This newly created High School Saxophone Ensemble was developed and sponsored by the Hawai'i Saxophone Foundation. We are very grateful for the large participation and for a very successful ensemble. We hope to continue this program in the years to come! Congratulations to all these talented young saxophonists! |
