Students from six high schools on Oahu committed to rehearsals on Sunday mornings with Director David Hirano. Mr. Hirano also taught numerous masterclasses covering reeds, embouchure, tongue position, air support, posture, and instrument carriage. They performed two pieces at the UH Saxophone Choir Concert on March 18, 2018 and performed the last piece together with the college and community members.
This newly created High School Saxophone Ensemble was developed and sponsored by the Hawai'i Saxophone Foundation. We are very grateful for the large participation and for a very successful ensemble. We hope to continue this program in the years to come! Congratulations to all these talented young saxophonists! |
Watch Now Blur is the first piece commissioned by the Hawaii Saxophone Foundation. Composed by UH Professor Thomas Osborne he describes his piece as a reflection between music and the visual arts.
“Whether one is composing a new piece or taking a photograph, one must consider some of the same basic principles: proportion, color and form. Many of my favorite photographs using long exposures, photos in which the tail lights of a passing car may paint vivid red streaks across the frame.” Blur is a sonic attempt to recreate those effects through sweeping long tones across the texture like crisscrossing beams of color juxtaposed to undulating rhythms and sonorities. |
