On November 18, 2016, The Hawaii Saxophone Foundation co-sponsored a masterclass with Lou Marini at the University of Hawaii Music Department. The University of Hawaii Saxophone Choir will premier several new works for this ensemble including Festive Overture (arr. Riojas), Einstein on 6th Street (Montoya) Asenal (arr. Kashihara), and Milonga del Angel (arr. Yukumoto).
This year’s concert will show cases several guest artists including Director of the UH Marching Band David Blon, Sax Forte Quartet, the Kawananakoa Middle School Saxophone Quartet, and percussionist of the UH Wind Ensemble. The Hawaii Saxophone Foundation will be hosting a silent auction prior to the concert. The HSF is a non-profit organization which is active in the community and sponsors many free events, masterclasses, scholarships and concerts including the UH Saxophone Choir. A veteran of the Woody Herman’s Big Band and the Vanguard Band, Lovano currently resides in New York City. He has collaborated with some of jazz greatest including John Scofield, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Billy Higgins, Dave Holland, Bob Brookmeyer and many more. Lovano’s illustrious relationship with Blue Note Records began in 1991 and includes eight Grammy nominations with a win in the Best Large Ensemble category for 2000’s 52nd Street Themes. Lovano has undoubtedly secured his place as one of the great saxophonist in jazz history.
